Take Care of Yourself

Friends,

I am writing to you today to remind you to take it easy and care for yourself. This is the period of in-between seasons. In Ayurveda, it's known as Ritu Sandhi. It is the seasonal juncture and a time when we are more vulnerable to falling ill.

With the Autumn Equinox approaching, the seasons and weather begin to fluctuate. It is common to feel restless, scattered, and anxious as the weather changes. In addition, you may notice redness and/or dryness in your skin.

This is the time to prepare your body to transition from summer's high heat to Fall's cool and windy qualities. Observing the fur and feather changes in animals here on the farm, you can see that they do this naturally. No planning is needed. However, humans have altered and manipulated their environments, so we must proactively manage these seasonal changes to ameliorate the adverse impact.

Things You Can Do To Help The Transition:

  • Look to Nature and her bounty. Nature gives us all that we need, and our microbiome is diverse and healthy when we eat seasonally and locally.

  • Notice what is prominent in the grocery store now.

  • Apple Apples and more Apples! Apples help remove the body's heat that has accumulated all summer.

  • All the Fall Squash. How many different ways can you prepare it?

  • Recommendation: Favor cooked and easily digestible foods.

  • Sip warm water throughout the day.

  • Take warm baths-- preferably after performing abhyanga (warm oil massage).

  • Cook with ghee - the best oil as it calms vata but doesn't extinguish agni.

  • Layers! Here in the U.S. Northeast, we feel the two seasons within the same day. For example, last week, temps began in the high 40s but were in the 80s by the afternoon. Layers allow you to start warm and cool as needed.

Things You Want To Avoid Now

  • Direct winds. Use a light layered hat to protect your ears and cover your neck and throat on windy days.

  • Gradually stop eating cold and dry things (chips, crackers, ice cream)

  • No more napping. I am a fan of naps in the summer; however, according to Ayurveda, summer is the only time it is okay to take a siesta.

We have several offers to help you with the transition.

We got you!

You got this!
